Thank you for holding a public consultation on July 28th on the proposed GTA West Corridor, which is also known as Highway 413. The Brampton Board of Trade’s position on Highway 413 is well established and clear: We support this critical infrastructure project, and know that our member businesses will benefit tremendously from the improvement in movement it will bring for goods and people. The business case for the proposed highway is strong. One 2012 study estimated it would bring a $1 Billion annual boost to provincial GDP. Today an average of 22,000 trucks carry $900 million of goods across the 401 corridor every single day, so it is easy to understand how an additional highway that makes travel across the region quicker and easier would translate to large economic benefit. What did the provincial government recently announce? The Government of Ontario announced that effective 12:01 am on Friday, July 16, today, the province will move to Stage 3 of the re-opening framework. Stage 3 will see a resumption of many indoor activities. What will stay the same in Stage 3? Maintaining social distance and masking when indoors or distance cannot be maintained remains an important feature of Stage 3, much like earlier stages. In addition, the requirement to actively screen employees and passively screen patrons will remain in place. There are exceptions where in some instances it is necessary to actively screen patrons. Please consult the full regulation (link below) to ensure your business is in compliance. Read more

If there are three letters that stand to have an outsized impact on Brampton businesses and family budgets over the next decade, they are “L-R-T”. It is an acronym for Light Rail Transit, a form of higher- order transit City Council is proposing will extend from Steeles, along Main Street, to the Brampton GO station. Many remember that in 2015 Metrolinx offered a fully-funded extension of the Hurontario LRT built to downtown Brampton on Main Street– an offer that was rejected by City Council at the time. This week the LRT debate is back – and the stakes are so high that you will want to pay attention. Read more

It’s hard to think of a decision that will have a longer-lasting and more pronounced impact on Brampton’s downtown core than the Main St Light Rail Transit (LRT) project that the City is currently considering. The system would be an extension of Metrolinx’s Hurontario LRT that begins in Port Credit, continues north and, as currently designed, ends at Steeles Avenue. When the provincial government originally committed funding for the project in 2015 the segment now under consideration in Brampton was included and paid for, but the previous Council declined to have it built.
