My Summer at BBOT
Hi my name is Annisa. I am a student at York University entering my third year of studies in Business Administration at the Schulich School of Business. During this summer I had a wonderful opportunity to work at the Brampton Board of Trade (BBOT). I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff at BBOT for allowing me to be part of the team this summer!
Prior to working at the Brampton Board of Trade, I was unfamiliar with the various functions performed by a Chamber of Commerce. While job searching online I came across the summer job posting and made an application after researching the Brampton Board of Trade. I felt it would be a great opportunity since the BBOT is connected to numerous businesses and strives to improve opportunities for local companies.
Fortunately, my assumptions were proven correct!
Interning at BBOT was a valuable learning experience. My knowledge about the many roles of BBOT broadened but more importantly I learnt a great deal about many of its members. I assisted the staff with a variety of office tasks and participated in events such as the Business Excellence Awards and Top 40 Under 40. I have learned more about what happens within my community over the last four months than I had in the past 18 years of living in Brampton! BBOT is comprised of a very small team of very hardworking individuals. There is always an upcoming event to prepare for or potential members to recruit and I observed first hand how everyone lends a helping hand to get things done. Everyday at BBOT was different. Some days I found myself creating social media posts for upcoming holidays while other days I sat in team meetings, and learned about team collaboration within an office environment. All of these skills will be applicable throughout my career.
My largest project involved putting together a member survey program that spanned the final two months of my internship. The goal of this program was to launch a series of surveys to assist BBOT to connect with members and gain valuable feedback. This project gave me the opportunity to research and communicate with members while analyzing my findings with the team. I was given a lot of freedom with the project which enabled me to take initiative while also being able to ask for help as required to complete tasks. These skills will prove useful as I continue my studies at school and pursue a future career in business.
Overall, I believe my summer internship at BBOT was a worthwhile experience. I improved my organizational and time management skills. I was given an opportunity to network and learn more about local businesses in Brampton. Most important, I learned the importance of BBOT in the community and how this Chamber of Commerce tries to make a difference and affect positive change for businesses. My experience was positive and I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from the friendly and supportive staff of BBOT. Thank you to everyone for an enjoyable work experience at BBOT!
