Thanks to a generous Rotary Club financial contribution
and the buying power of Brampton Library, young children,
pre-teens and palliative care patients at William Osler
Health Centre’s Brampton Campus now have more than 165
new books to enjoy. READ MORE
Smaller children can now start reading a wide array
of new picture books, board books and easy readers;
older kids can take advantage of popular juvenile fiction
and young adult selections; and palliative care patients
now have access to 38 new audiobooks designed to meet
a variety of tastes.
“The Rotary Club of Brampton and Brampton Library have
been teaming up to provide books to patients at William
Osler for more than 15 years,” notes Rotary Foundation
Chair and Brampton Library Finance Coordinator Jerome
Dawson. “Being able to make any patient’s stay more
pleasant, even in a small way, can make a big difference.
Partnering with the Library, the community hub for literacy
and lifelong learning, makes perfect sense, and ensures
we have a greater impact that often goes far beyond
a hospital stay.”
Donating items over the years has ensured the hospital
collections stay current, worn items are replaced with
newer ones, and children can take home books they become
attached to during their time at the hospital. Each
of the donated items was thoughtfully selected for the
three target groups by knowledgeable Brampton Library
staff, with the Rotary Club donation of just over $2,600
enabling close to $4,000 in materials to be purchased
and provided to the hospital.

Celebrate
“Best Employers” of Skilled Immigrants Does
your organization excel at recruiting, retaining and
promoting skilled immigrants? The Toronto Region Immigrant
Employment Council (TRIEC) is pleased to announce a
call for entries for the 2nd Annual IS Awards. TRIEC
is inviting small, medium and large organizations in
the GTA to submit their case for being recognized as
a "best employer" of skilled immigrants.
IS stands for Immigrant Success, because success is
the outcome when your workforce comes from a highly
qualified, educated and motivated talent pool. For the
purpose of the IS Awards, skilled immigrants are defined
as individuals who have immigrated to Canada with post-secondary
international education, professional credentials and/or
work experience.
There are four employer award categories:
Small Employer Award - Open to organizations with less
than 100 employees. Mid-Size Employer Award - Open to
organizations with 100 to 500 employees. Large Employer
Award - Open to organizations with more than 500 employees.
Influencer Award - Open to organizations of any size
who have promoted the integration of immigrants to those
outside of their own organization.
There are two new individual achievement categories
honouring those who have contributed to immigrant success:
The Canadian HR Reporter Award and the Toronto Star
"People's Choice" Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Immigrant Success.
IS Award applications will be evaluated for their innovative
practices and tools in:
• Awareness & Leadership on the issue of workforce
integration of immigrants;
• HR Planning & Sourcing with a focus on skilled
immigrants;
• Selecting skilled immigrants and creating processes
that are bias-free and inclusive;
• Developing skilled immigrant employees; and
• Creating an Inclusive Climate in the workplace.
Entries are judged by a blue chip panel of human resource
professionals, managers and immigrants. Winners will
be recognized among their peers and in the media as
leaders in an area of increasing importance to the Canadian
economy.
The 2006 IS Award recipients included Ernst & Young,
Family Service Association of Toronto, i3DVR International
and St. Michael’s Hospital.
If your organization excels at recruiting, retaining
and promoting skilled immigrants, we encourage you to
apply. Share your success stories today.
The application deadline is June 30, 2007. Visit www.IS2007.ca
for details or call TRIEC at
416.944.2627 x 282.
The IS Awards are a project of the Toronto Region Immigrant
Employment Council (TRIEC), www.triec.ca. TRIEC is funded
by The Maytree Foundation (www.maytree.com) and Citizenship
and Immigration Canada.
TRIEC’s initiatives include www.hireimmigrants.ca, a
program that provides employers with interactive tools
and resources to accelerate the integration of skilled
immigrants into their organizations. Last year’s award
winners are profiled on the site.
The 2007 IS Awards are funded by Human Resources and
Social Development Canada, sponsored by RBC Financial
Group, and presented in partnership with Canadian HR
Reporter and The Toronto Star.
