“Skills without Borders” is a Brampton Board of Trade program designed to raise awareness about labour needs in Brampton and the ability of skilled immigrants to meet those needs for local business.

In Phase 1 of the project (2006-2007) the BBOT conducted research on employers’ labour needs, held focus groups and surveyed employers to help better understand some of the barriers to hiring skilled immigrants - from the employers’ perspective.

A Resource Guide was also developed to provide information about various programs and services available to employers to facilitate the effective employment integration of skilled immigrants, including job placement services, language programs, credential recognition, accreditation and licensing services, co-op and internship programs, wage subsidies and mentorship programs. The research reports and the Resource Guide are available at www.skillswithoutborders.com. In addition, the Board of Trade hosted a series of Employer Seminars on employment integration of immigrants, and a very successful Job Fair targeted to newcomers and employers with job opportunities.

“Overall, we had a very positive response from employers towards the work that we were doing to better connect them with skilled immigrants,” says CEO Sheldon Leiba. We feel it is important to continue to build on this momentum as it is so critical in a city like Brampton that attracts a tremendous amount of talent from all over the world.”

Phase 2, that commenced in Fall of 2007, is a direct response to issues raised by employers related to hiring immigrants and accommodating diversity in the workplace. The program is very dedicated to increasing employers’ awareness about the benefits and challenges of developing and managing a diverse workforce, focusing on the fact that cultural diversity is good for business.

Dr. Yamil H. Alonso continues to lead the Skills Without Borders program as the Project Coordinator.
